Monitor is a regular feature on the Bokamoso Ba Rona Blog. Want to keep tabs on key debates and conferences around the country? This is where you can start.

The Truth Conference took place at the Tropicana Hotel on Marine Parade in Durban. It was held over two days, 24-25 September. One day was just to speak about the relative issues and the final day involved group discussions to explore solutions and to formulate conference resolutions. While I cannot give an exact amount my estimation would be about 100-150 people including the Umtapo board and speakers. The topics discussed were Health (chaired by Dr. Lydia Cairncross), Education (chaired by Dr. Neville Alexander), Economics (chaired by Prof. Eugene Cairncross), Arts & Culture (chaired by Prof. Mbulelo Mzamane) and Law, Governance & Citizenship (chaired by Mr. Jay Reddy).

We recently had our trip to Durban to attend Umtapo’s Truth Conference at the Tropicana Hotel from 24 to 25 September 2010. The conference was set in place by the organisation in order to discuss the critical issues that are affecting our countries and to come up with feasible solutions to these issues. We had 5 topics to discuss, each with their own speaker, namely; economics (by Prof. Eugene Cairncross), Culture (Prof. Mbulelo Mzamane), Education (Dr Neville Alexander), Health (Dr Lydia Cairncross) and Law, governance and Citizenship (Mr Jay Reddy). We were given short ideas from each of these people on their specified topics and were told we would discuss and reach conclusions in groups and then report back on those conclusions at the end of the conference. The overall conclusions of the conference were to be told at the Steve Biko International Peace Awards.

State of the Nation Address 2010

President Nelson Mandela’s steps to freedom on 11 February 1990 changed the face of South Africa forever. That momentous day will be remembered when Parliament opens on the evening of Thursday 11 February 2010. President Jacob Zuma chose to celebrate the occasion by giving his second State of the Nation Address to a joint sitting of the fourth Parliament at seven o’clock that evening. More than 200 learners from schools from all nine provinces form a Junior Guard of Honour on either side of the red carpet!

Selection of Members for National Council for Correctional Services

28 January 2010: In a joint meeting with the Select Committee on Security and Constitutional Development, the Minister of Correctional Services discussed the appointment of individuals to serve on the National Council for Correctional Services. The Minister tabled a shortlist of eight names which she hoped the Committee would endorse. After briefly outlining the eight shortlisted individuals for consideration, the Minister advised the committee members to study the curriculum vitae of each before deciding on whether to proceed with the appointments or not.
